The Zhouyi is a compendium of history and a source of poetical and scientific images that has been passed down for at least 2500 years. In that time it has acquired a profound, if cumbersome, set of later Chinese commentaries. In the 1970’s an edition of the original text (called simply the “Yi or change”) was found by archaeologists in Northern China. This 1st century CE text is free of the Chinese commentarial burden produced over the last 2000 years. It gives us a chance to visit this great classic in a fresh but ancient context. Liu Ming’s translation is terse and to the point – vibrant and alive and meant to be used for divination, cosmological reflection, and as an approach the great wisdom of the Ancestors.
